Legislature Convenes April 10th

The 2023 Regular Legislative Session convenes at Noon on Monday, April 10th and must adjourn no later than 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 8th. All bills other than appropriation bills or local bills must be prefiled no later than Friday, March 31st. Legislators may file any number of appropriation or local bills; however, they are limited to filing five “general” bills.

We have already had one legislative session in 2023. Necessitated by damaged caused by Hurricanes Laura, Delta, and Ida, Governor Edwards called a special session of the Legislature on January 22nd to convene at Noon on January 30th. Legislators quickly appropriated $45 million to the Insure Louisiana Incentive Program and adjourned sine die at 2:32 on February 3rd. The first invitation to likely property insurers was sent on February 9th. Insurers may apply through March 10th. Additional invitations will go out until the funds are dispensed.

The program will match dollars with property insurers to participate in Louisiana’s voluntary property insurance market in an effort to increase the availability of property insurance, increase competitive pressure on insurance rates, and reduced the number of policies held by Louisiana’s insurer of last resort, Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corporation.
